Ann Moss – soprano, Hillary Nordwell – piano, Alexa Beattie – viola
Hailed as “beautiful feminine giants of chamber music,” One Art Ensemble is quickly gaining recognition for its inspiring juxtaposition of instrumental music, art song, and works by living composers. The members of One Art Ensemble have been performing together in various configurations since 2004.
As a duo, Moss and Nordwell have accumulated an outreach performance history spanning nearly six years, presenting recitals of new and historic repertoire in churches, schools, hospitals and convalescent homes throughout the Bay Area. Moss and Beattie collaborated on CMASH’s first annual New American Chamber Music program in February of 2008, performing works for soprano and string quartet. Beattie and Nordwell have performed together in ensembles ranging from duo to piano quintet at venues including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and University of California, Santa Cruz.
Officially formed in April 2009, One Art Ensemble has appeared at San Francisco Conservatory, Old First Concerts, the Bing Concert Series at Stanford University Hospital and San Francisco’s Noontime Concerts; in summer 2009 they made a concert tour of northern Washington state, where they were interviewed on the KONP Radio show Artbeat.
Other engagements include CMASH’s third annual New American Chamber Music program at Christ Church Lutheran in San Francisco (February 2010), Noe Valley Chamber Music (April 2010), and an appearance in Bemis Hall of Lincoln, MA (June 2010). In April 2009, One Art Ensemble gave the west coast premiere of four songs by Vartan Aghababian, who subsequently composed a new set of songs premiered by One Art Ensemble in April, 2010.
One Art Ensemble also commissioned Liam Wade to set Drei Träume, a collection of poems by Lisa DeSiro, which received its official premiere in February 2010. They will premiere a new set of songs, Mame Loshn, composed by Miriam Miller with poetry by Sarah Moskovitz, on their upcoming concerts in Washington State. This winter the Ensemble embarked on a collaborative project with the PhD Composition Students at UC Davis, which culminates in performances in August 2010. Through collaborations like these, One Art Ensemble contributes to an expanding repertoire of music that is carefully crafted to highlight the full range and expressive power of this unique chamber ensemble.
